Health Sciences, Career Studies Certificate

Purpose

The Health Sciences Career Studies Certificate (CSC) (Plan code 221-190-01) has four purposes:

  1. Provide CPR certification and eligibility to sit for the nurse aide credentialing exam
  2. Prepare students for the nursing program offered in partnership with Tidewater Community College (TCC) by completing pre-requisite courses
  3. Prepare students to test for nurse aide certification
  4. Prepare students for success in other healthcare educational programs, such as occupational therapy assistant and pharmacy technician offered by TCC and other colleges.

This CSC allows students to prepare to enter a variety of healthcare fields at Eastern Shore Community College, at Tidewater Community College that ESCC shares courses with, and at other colleges and training schools. Students should work closely with an advisor to select courses that best align with their career goals.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will be able to

  1. Earn certification for CPR
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of various healthcare careers they are eligible to pursue
  3. Communicate effectively through written, verbal, and electronic methods
  4. Provide care for individuals with various physical and psychosocial health conditions in clinical settings.

Employment Opportunities

Completion of the Health Sciences CSC will result in CPR certification and eligibility to test for nurse aide certification. This CSC may also lead to educational programs that result in careers such as emergency medical services, radiology, phlebotomy, and physical therapy.

Program Admission Requirements

Students must have either a high school diploma or recognized equivalency and have their English and mathematics skills assessed for college-level ability. When necessary, ESCC offers courses in English and math to help students become eligible for Health Sciences CSC courses.
