Academic Advising

Academic advising is the cornerstone of student success and is designed to assist students in developing and following an academic plan that will enable them to meet their educational and career goals. Such assistance includes:

  • selecting a program,
  • developing a plan and timetable for completing the program,
  • creating and registering for course schedules each session,
  • monitoring and following students’ academic progress,
  • identifying appropriate learning assistance opportunities and referring students to such opportunities as necessary.

All new students are expected to work with an Advisor prior to their first enrollment in the College. During these initial advising sessions, the student’s educational and career goals are discussed in relationship to their academic program.

During the first year, students are assigned an Advisor based on their program. Curricular students should consult with their Advisor each semester for help with course selection and with all developments relating to their educational and career objectives.

Students are responsible for consulting the College Catalog and Student Handbook for course prerequisites and requirements before registering for a class. Students are encouraged to continue meeting with an academic advisor to confirm and refine their academic plan; those who self-advise accept full responsibility for their course selection decisions and for meeting curriculum requirements for graduation.
